ASPHALT COMPOSITION ROOFING MATERIALS

WHAT IS A COMPOSITION ROOF?

Composition roofing is the technical name for asphalt shingles. Don’t worry, Leak Seal Roofing Inc. knows precisely what you’re talking about if you ask about asphalt shingles. While not the exact same, they are used interchangeably in the roofing industry.

As roofing technology has improved and evolved over the years composition shingles have surpassed traditional asphalt shingles in durability and waterproofing abilities. Leak Seal Roofing installs composition asphalt shingles as part of our commitment to quality and value.

Asphalt shingles are far and away the most common steep slope and residential roofing material in the United States. Two of the main reasons for that are asphalt shingles are cost-effective and come in various color options. Composition roofing installed by Leak Seal Roofing generally falls into two types of roofing shingles–architectural shingles and 3-tab shingles.

HIGH-QUALITY COMPOSITION ROOF TYPES

The most commonly installed composition roofing type by Leak Seal Roofing in the Pacific Northwest is architectural shingles. Generally considered the superior composition roofing material, architectural shingles are designed in tab form and installed on top of each other to create a highly durable roof. Architectural shingles are larger, thicker, and heavier than 3-tab shingles, which enhances their longevity and durability.

Architectural shingles, also called laminate shingles, provide enhanced protection, including moss resistance, high wind speed tolerance, and fire resistance. Composition roofing is an environmentally friendly option because it can be repurposed once uninstalled. Along with Leak Seal Roofing’s industry-leading 10-year workmanship warranty, many architectural shingle manufacturers offer warranties that last up to 50 years.

A less commonly installed composition roof material in the Pacific Northwest is 3-tab shingles. When the time comes for repairs, restorations, or replacements, 3-tab shingles offer some of the quickest installation times. Generally, 3-tab composition shingles come with a 20-year warranty that Leak Seal Roofing backs with a 10-year workmanship warranty as well.

HOW LONG DOES A COMPOSITION ROOF LAST?

Other than cost, one of the things most homeowners want to know is how long a composition roof last. A standard composition roof material like 3-tab shingles has an expected lifespan of about 20 years. Architectural shingles have an advanced service life of at least 30 years, but some brands offer warranties that last up to 50 years.

Because composition roofs are less expensive than some premium types of roofing, they will likely have a shorter lifespan. In comparison, metal roofs last up to 70 years, and wood shake roofing has an expected service life of 30 years. Leak Seal Roofing’s highest priority is to provide you with the highest quality materials at the best value for your investment. We won’t try to sell you a roofing system you won’t benefit from just because it comes with a higher price tag. We offer you the best long-term solution, not what has the highest profits.

To make the most of your composition asphalt roof, schedule regular roof inspections and have proactive maintenance and repairs performed.
